Boys Names: Sound too Alcoholic?

I'm thinking about names for the new baby:

I want a short name, or a long name with a nice nickname
I like old and traditional names
It has to sound good next to "Jack"
Nothing macho or redneck or weird
Not Geoffrey. I don't know why but I don't like it. They (mum & dad) would have named me Geoffrey had I been a boy. Close shave there huh

I like Samuel (Sam) and Daniel (Danny) so far. I'm worried it'll sound stupid if I have two sons called Jack & Daniel. Does it make me sound like a raging alcoholic? Because even if I am one it's not too good to spread the word around is it.

I really like Sam/Samuel. There are two little boys my son's age named Sam (a distant cousin and a neighbor). I think it works well for a little boy and it grows well too. And of course it sounds great with Jack.

Hi MD, Yes, I love it too, because it's not too macho and brings to mind a laid-back & fun person, but Craig always says "mmmmm" when I bring the name up, like he's not convinced. I'll have to work on him.

I like the name Samuel (It was my father's middle name.) His first name was Jacob (Jake) and I have two nephews named Jake and Jack. They all sound good together and it's you they have to sound good to not anyone else. Linda

jack and danny are the names of sue's brother stevens kids. they go really well together and dan/danny is are good as shortened versions. we will rack our brains. how different or conventional do you both want to go. you will have to run a poll on the blog once you have a shortlist. take care. x x x

Samuel is my pick if we have another boy (years down the road!) , so that would get my vote. I like traditional names too because they won't ever go out of style. We've used family names for our 3 kids too: Jacob (after my grandpa), Gabrielle "Ellie" (after my great-aunt Ellie) and Emmaline (after my great-great-grandmother Emma Caroline). Pick something you like and don't worry what everyone else says.

As for Craig, you could always do what Nathan and I have done. I got to pick the first name because I was the one that carried the baby and went through labor. Nathan got to pick the middle names (Clarence, Hope, and Kate, respectively). We did make sure that our choice was okay with each other before we made the final decision though. Good luck!

PAM!! First of all, I've been gone, and I haven't gotten a chance to say CONGRATS on finding out it's a boy. I think you will be a lovely mother of 2 boys and they will be such great friends. I am thrilled for you and thank you SO MUCH for the text. We were really excited for you.

I like both of the names you picked. We have mentioned Samuel if we have another boy, and I actually know 2 other families that have a Jack and a Sam. But I also like Daniel. And Danny is cute for a little boy, but I REALLY like Daniel, the full name. And as for the alcoholic thing, might as well embrace it. :)

Can't wait to catch up, hope your lights are back on.

Pam: Congrats on your second son! I'm sure he will be as beautiful and wonderful as Jack is. Sam and Dan are great names. I also like Will and Nick and Neil (my brother's name which I've always REALLY liked). I wouldn't worry about the Jack Daniels thing. Just stay away from names that could be mistaken for your dog instead of your child. Oma

Mimi: You're right - its up to us but OH the pressure!!

Lee: I know about Jack & Danny and always think it sounds so good together. Hope Sue doesn't think I'm a stalker!

Jen: I may well not use Sam (leaving it for you). Craig still crumples up his nose, even though I love it. I'll have to enforce the plan of me picking first name!

Em: Welcome home. Can't wait to see you at some point.

Oma: I was once on a message board where a woman was so mad because the baby name she had picked out was used by her sister-in-law for her new dog. Yikes!!

You never should have broached the subject of names with me around. It's one of my pet peeves. Samuel is terrible. you want your kid to be the butcher on the Brady bunch? It's an old man name. Daniel is a good name...unless your other son is named Jack. I have a brother named Jack except his real name is john as in, remember when people used nicnames instead of just naming their kids nicnames? as in, John F./Jack Kennedy? If you want strong man names to go with jack, stick with the classics. William(Bill), Steven, Joseph Thomas, Sean, kevin, or just plain Nick. you can't go wrong, they're boring but you don't end up with kids sounding like a mixed drink or like you read the old testament every night. it's your choice, be bold! I say go with Maximus, Titus or Clint.

Ted,Thanks for the input! Most appreciated.
Titus and Clint are far too close to women's rude bits to consider (remember how creative and cruel kids can be). I like Billy & Max though so will put them in the mix. Sam's out.
